Complete the patient data in the white boxes. Record a zero for any component not required. Once all required fields are completed the results will appear in the darker boxes. The TAB key can be used to move between the input boxes.
Fluid deficits are calculated by estimating dehydration as a percentage of bodyweight. The table below can be used as a guide.
% Dehyd. | HR (b/min) | CRT (s) | Skin Tent (s) | PCV (%) | TP (g/l) | Crea (micromol/L) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
6 | 40-60 | 2 | 3 | 40 | 70 | 130-180 |
8 | 60-80 | 3 | 4 | 45 | 75 | 180-270 |
10 | 80-100 | 3 | 4 | 45 | 75 | 270-360 |
12 | >100 | >4 | >5 | >50 | >80 | >360 |
To calculate fluid therapy rates, enter the required volume of fluids to be replaced, time periods and giving set drop volume.
Most large animal giving sets are 10 drops/ml, most small animal giving sets are 20 drops/ml.
General guidelines for delivery rates - starting rate: 10 to 20 ml/kg/h.
Reassess and adjust rate and volume based on the horse's condition. 20 to 45 ml/kg/h is well tolerated by normal horses, but avoid if hypoproteinaemia, renal or cardiac desease are present. Resuscitation bolus: 80ml/kg.
